Pro tip, from the book
The causal chain exercise at the end is the most valuable part. If you cannot draw a clear line from your Learning & Growth measures to your Financial outcomes, your scorecard is a collection of metrics, not a strategy. The power of the Balanced Scorecard is not measurement, it is the explicit theory of how your business creates value.
Who should run this prompt
Module role profileWho should review your numbers and financial narrative? Numbers do not lie — but they can mislead when read through the wrong lens. A CFO and an investor look at the same P&L and ask completely different questions. A customer's finance team looks at your pricing and asks a question neither of them thought of. Use this page to choose who is in the room before you present, model, or decide based on your financial data.

How to make any role sharper
- Add years of experience: "...with 15 years in enterprise SaaS" produces different depth than just the title.
- Add what they care most about: "You care most about [X]" shapes every word of the output.
- Add their communication style: "Be direct. Flag risks first. No jargon." changes the tone entirely.

The problem it solvesthings that will determine your financial results next year, customer satisfaction, team capability, operational efficiency, innovation pipeline, are not being measured at all.
How the framework works
From the printed pageDeveloped by Robert Kaplan and David Norton at Harvard Business School and published in Harvard Business Review in 1992, the Balanced Scorecard measures business performance across four perspectives: Financial (how do we look to shareholders?), Customer (how do customers see us?), Internal Processes (what must we excel at?), and Learning & Growth (can we continue to improve and create value?). The insight is that financial metrics are lagging indicators - they tell you what happened. The other three perspectives contain the leading indicators that predict future financial performance.
The method, in four moves
Do these in orderBuild the scorecard around your strategy, not generic KPIs. Each measure must connect to a strategic objective.
Limit to 4–5 measures per perspective, more creates noise and diffuses attention.
Financial metrics are the output; Learning & Growth metrics are the input. Both matter.
Review the scorecard monthly at leadership level quarterly is too infrequent for meaningful course correction. Measure what matters not just what is easy to count By the time your Financial numbers move, the problem started months earlier in Customer or Learning & Growth. Watching only the lagging quadrant means you're always reacting to a story that already finished.

When this page changes, your copy of the book does not have to.
The book prints the framework. This page keeps it — and keeps the prompt current, because prompting technique moves faster than print does. When it moves, this page is rewritten and the code in your copy keeps pointing at it. No second edition, no replacement purchase, no account.
If something here looks wrong — a prompt that does not match its framework, a figure that reads oddly — tell Raphy. That correction reaches every printed copy at once.
Copying is free. An account keeps them.
